4 Qualities You Will Discover:

1.  Respect for the Filmmaking Process

Having being raised by filmmaker parents, I fully understand the industrial busyness even the simplest of projects can be. Not having to babysit the composer allows space and freedom for further creativity. It helps that I have a great enthusiasm & interest in filmmaking - which brings about a greater understanding as to what music the project will need.

2.  Expertise

It's one thing to compose a good tune. It is another thing to compose a good tune and to be aware of the dialogue, the timing of cues, understanding what the sound crew are doing, and knowing that an oboe, instead of a clarinet, will solidify a certain character far more powerfully.

3.  Understanding the Story

Getting one's head around the big picture and then reinterpreting it musically is the same as matching the furniture with the curtains, paint colour, carpet, etc. One has to know when the music is front and centre, as well as when to have no music whatsoever. It's in these dynamics that you'll find a powerful force. Spielberg once said that his movie created the tears to well up - but it was the music that caused it to drip.

4.  Zeal

This sort of goes without saying, yet on the other hand, being passionate about something can also come in the form of sweat and grim looks. Some people are natural born businessmen or builders or helpers. I grew up listening to soundtracks and movie scores, and I knew from then that I was being moulded to be a musician. It is still my joy.
